Spring Carnival Fasnacht, Basel

Be sure to visit Basel, the second largest city in Switzerland, to take part in the Fasnacht spring carnival. At the world-famous three-day carnival, participants in colorful costumes and masks march through the streets of the city. Carnival kicks off the Monday after Ash Wednesday, with cafes and bars open all night as confetti, sweets and flowers are thrown into the crowd.

St. Gallen

An Irish monk founded St. Gallen in 612 AD. What was once a medieval center has now grown into the seventh largest city in Switzerland. This old town has many picturesque buildings with carved balconies, colorful frescoes and statues in relief. The large double-towered cathedral has wonderful ceiling frescoes and stucco work.

Rhine Falls

Located near the city of Schaffhausen, Europe's largest waterfall is a magnificent natural wonder. Near the waterfall is the medieval castle Schuss Laufen, which houses: restaurant; youth hostel; the shops.


On the National Day of Switzerland, August 1, a fantastic fireworks display is arranged at the Rhine Falls, attracting thousands of tourists.
